Among the different processes of plastic surgery, one of the most satisfactory is a breast reconstruction after the breast has been removed due to a Cancer or other illness, the modern techniques used by the surgeons allow them to create a similar breast with normal appearance (shape and size). Frequently the breast is immediately reconstructed after extirpation (mastectomy), in this way the patient does not have to find herself without one breast after the surgery.
A breast reconstruction after mastectomy is not an easy process; there are several options to consider in this regard. For this reason selecting one of the procedures implies giving the patient an explanation in detail of all the existent or possible procedures. That is the only way for you to understand your surgery and know what to expect from it.
Between 3 to 5 hours.
Who are the best candidates?
Most of the patients eligible for mastectomy are in adequate condition for breast reconstruction, some of them at the same surgical time. However, the best candidates are women under cancer control through mastectomy.
What is the recovery process?
After the surgery, the patient has to avoid moving her arms up for the first week. After 7 days the patient must get the stitches cured and removed. The patient must avoid picking up heavy objects and must not drive during two weeks for a more effective recovery.
Returning to normal activities
The time for people to recover and come back to their regular activities changes according to the patient and her activities. However on a normal basis it could take 3 weeks.
